IUCN World Conservation Congress - Release of Motions

From 23 April to 23 June, IUCN Members can participate in an online discussion of motions on the Congress website. During this time, Members can support motions, express concerns, debate pros and cons, and suggest amendments to the text, with a view towards reaching a consensus. Commissions, National and Regional Committees, and Secretariat can also participate in a technical and scientific advisory capacity.  The list of motions with links to their texts can be found at https://iucncongress2025.org/assembly/motions/list

Together with other New Zealanders Aroha Mead and Phil Seddon, I was a member of IUCN's Policy Development Working Group on Synthetic Biology and Nature Conservation. IUCN's draft policy can be found at https://iucncongress2025.org/assembly/motions/motion/087 A detailed discussion of the background to the policy development process with links to relevant documents can be found at https://iucn.org/our-work/informing-policy/setting-conservation-priorities/synthetic-biology-and-nature-conservation

If you have any questions about the process or the draft policy itself please contact me.

The Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation (PIRT) is supported by the Pacific BioScapes Programme.

The Pacific BioScapes Programme is a European Union (EU) funded action, managed and implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
The Programme contributes to the sustainable development of Pacific Small Island Developing States through the implementation of 30 focused activities taking place across a diversity of ecosystems in 11 countries (Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu) that will address critical issues concerning coastal and marine biodiversity, and ecosystem-based responses to climate change adaptation.
